5 Tips For Preparing Your Child For A Doctor's Visit

by Caitlin Obara

Just like adults, children have to visit the doctor from time to time for various illnesses or injuries. However, children tend to be more uneasy about going to the doctor's office because they anticipate pain or do not know what to expect. As a parent, there are several things you can do to prepare your child for a doctor's visit.

1. Tell Your Child At the Right Time

When discussing doctor's appointments with children, timing is everything. While you do not want to tell your child about the appointment at the last minute, you also do not want to do it too soon. If you bring up the subject weeks before the appointment, your child may overthink it and become more stressed. It is best to tell your child about the appointment a day or two ahead of time.

2. Discuss the Details of the Visit

If your child knows exactly what to expect from the doctor's visit, he or she may be less nervous. For example, if your child is visiting the doctor for a routine checkup, explain that the doctor will examine how he or she is growing and developing.

3. Let Your Child Express His or Her Fears

It is normal for kids to be scared and anxious about doctor's appointments. Encourage your child to talk about his or her fears and correct any misunderstandings. For example, if your child is afraid that getting a shot will be extremely painful, explain that it just feels like a small pinch and is very quick.

4. Bring a Familiar Item to the Visit

It is a good idea to bring a familiar item, such as a toy or blanket, to your child's visit to the doctor. As the two of you are in the waiting room, your child can hold or play with the item. This can provide a great distraction from various sights and sounds and keep your child calm.

5. Leave Early

If you are rushing to get to the doctor's appointment, it can make a stressful situation even more nerve-wracking. Try to arrive at the doctor's office at least 10 to 15 minutes early. This will give your child some to get familiar with the surroundings and relax.

While doctor's appointments can be scary for children, you can make the experience more pleasant for your child. If you follow these tips, the visit will be less stressful for both of you. For more information, contact a medical office like Kitsap Children's Clinic LLP today.
