Maintaining Good Health Even When You're Busy

How To Lose Baby Weight The Realistic Way

by Caitlin Obara

You just had a baby, and the last thing you want to do is think about losing weight. Still, you might feel a bit motivated to get on your feet and begin making some changes in your daily routine. Here are a few tips that will get you on the right track to losing weight.

Talk to your general practitioner.

Your GP will help you find the best time to begin exercising after childbirth. It will take significantly longer, perhaps six weeks, to get back to the gym after a caesarean section rather than a vaginal birth.

Set realistic goals.

Setting goals can be difficult, but you should focus on being realistic and setting short-term finish lines. Each week should include a new goal, one that allows you to easily fulfill it. You need to set up a plan that includes regular workouts and a healthy diet, not fads and dangerous crash diets.

Work out with your baby.

One of the best ways to spend time with your little one and still get fit is to exercise together. Strap your baby onto your chest or find the perfect stroller for a brisk 15 minute walk outside. If leaving the house isn't an option yet, workout DVDs and online videos could be the best option.

Pushing your baby in the stroller requires you to move quickly, but you should always be able to talk to your little one as you walk. You should not be out of breath.

One magazine offers a 26-minute workout that you can do with your little one in the stroller. Your first step is to walk for five minutes as a warmup. Next, walk quickly and exert yourself for about 30 seconds. Slow down your pace for the next 60 seconds. Your cool down should take about two or three minutes.

Still Pregnant? Know how much weight to gain.

Gaining the proper amount of weight during pregnancy can help you get fit quickly after labor. Doctors recommend that women giving birth to singles and who have a normal body mass index should gain between 25 and 35 pounds. An extra 10 pounds is recommended for women carrying twins. Women who are overweight need only gain up to 25 pounds.

Ultimately, it should take about one year to lose the weight. Avoid dieting for the first six weeks and allow your body to recover. It is healthy to lose weight at a rate of one or two pounds per week.
